Topic: JavaScript
Speaker: Barb Brenner
We learned a new word from attendee Jane Eno: "webify". You figure it out! We had a quick summary of HTML and then learned about JavaScript. We learned about some cool HTML, JavaScript, and VBScript sites are on the WWW. We had a great discussion of what Java is vs. what JavaScript is. On tangents we discussed Netscape vs. the other browser, the over usage of the word ActiveX, and PC based servers (WEBSITE and Personal Web Server).

Speaker: Barb Brenner
Barb Brenner gave a wonderful presentation on Cold Fusion. This presentation showed how to have a dynamic web page accessing data from a database. This saves time and energy in creating and maintaining several similar web pages. All you need to know is SQL, HTML and a few Cold Fusion tags. A web page created from Cold Fusion only shows HTML code when you view the source code in the browser. People that attended received a copy of Barb's code. Barb demostrated Cold Fusion in action by showing the web site at http://www.onto.com/adkgvc/cfm/oagcfm.html (the ADK GVC Outdoor Activity Guide). [Note: Thank you to John Homer at http://www.onto.com for donating space on his server for the ADK GVC Outdoor Activity Guide. John has COLD FUSION on his server. COLD FUSION allows us to store the data for our trips in a database and to use templates to create our web pages.]

Ash then demonstrated to the group how to create Java applications and Java applets. He showed us working applications as well as the code behind them. He demonstrated how to build J++ applications and applets using the built in wizards that come with J++. These included database access and animation.

Speaker: Chris Connor
Those who attended the April 23 VDUNY meeting were glad they came. Chris Connor, of Mindex, gave a talk on Microsoft's Developer Studio. With Developer Studio, a common environment for Visual C++, Fortran PowerStation, Visual Test, and MSDN. If you install any combination of these products on the same machine, you'll be able to use all of them from the same environment. He later went on to discuss Visual Studio (Professional Edition includes Visual Basic 5.0, Visual C++ 5.0, Visual J++ 1.1, Visual InterDev, and Visual FoxPro 5.0). Using these tools, Chris gave a great discussion on how he is creating a three tiered application (focusing mainly on the ActiveX server controls he created for the middle layer), the tools he uses for each of the layers, and some things to look out for. He then concluded with a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of each of the tools.
