2000 Meetings

Wednesday, Dec 13th, 2000
Speaker: Mark Whitney
Mark Whitney gave a demo of the Pathologists Associated Medical Labs clinical data retrieval system. It's an impressive system. It uses SQL7, MTS, web delivery via VBDocs and a true object oriented 3 tier design! It was a good tutorial on how to use VB with MTS (and COM+) as well. The fascinating presentation was accentuated by lively discussion throughout. Thanks Mark!

Speaker: Barb Brenner
Jackie Dillman provided us a healthy meal (thanks Jackie!).
Barb Brenner gave us the whirlwind tour of XML. We saw our first real XML document and took apart some DTDs and XSL sheets. We even gave her a well deserved "ooh" and "ahh" at the right time. It's nice to see Microsoft not only jumping on the bandwagon with a promising technology, but actually leading the way in some ways. XML is the way of the future for data.

Speaker: David Stevenson
Once again Jackie Dillman was gracious enough to provide us a healthy spaghetti dinner and dessert.
David Stevenson presented a review of ADO and a preview of ADO+. We covered the object models, DSNs, connections, various recordset types, XML compatibility and some of the new commands available in ADO+. The webification of everything is upon us!

Speaker: Daveid Stevenson
David Stevenson presented most of the new features and changes in the upcoming release of Visual Basic - Visual Basic.net. Microsoft seems to be merging their languages and tools to give us the best of everything. VB becomes much more Object-based and takes on the flavor of Java and C++, but is incompatible with the previous versions of VB. For instance, VB.net does not have a "variant" data type anymore–just "objects". Dave did a great job of opening our eyes. We won't be throwing out our copies of VB6 any time soon!

Speaker: Rob Mowery
Rob Mowery presented "Leveraging your development skills—Where do you go from here?" covering "off the shelf software" (OSS) focussing on Onyx and Viador as sophisticated examples. You can get his presentation here. The flash presentation/demo about Viador can be downloaded here too. Pat Bink said "This was a very interesting session that introduced us to some new ways that we can more quickly develop applications for our customers."

Wednesday, April 26th, 2000
Speaker: Dave Stevenson
This meeting started with homemade lasagna and salad (plus desserts!) provided by Jackie Dillman - yummm! She was gracious enough to donate any food proceeds to the domain name purchasing effort. We raised $45 in total that night, so we got the domain name (not live as of this writing).
Dave Stevenson gave an excellent presentation on the Windows Scripting Host. His presentation and examples are available online here. It's a powerful tool for all those "glue" projects (and more!). Dave gave out free disks of various things at the end of the meeting (You missed another good one!)

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2000
Speaker: Pat Bink
We started the meeting with Tim Arrowsmith discussing some of the recent VDUNY website changes. We then critiqued of the new group objectives (modified to include development environments other than Microsoft's) and discussed the new links page, voting mechanism, and group password (email the WebMaster if you don't have it yet). Pat Bink then presented a nice overview of ASP development (with lively discussion by other members). We ended with a division of responsibilities and leftover food/drink (You should have been there!).

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2000
In a roundtable format we shared our (1) experiences with trying for and obtaining Microsoft Certification (MCP, MSCD...), and (2) the resources we found valuable for developing applications (CDs, web sites, journals, books, user groups, conferences, etc.).

Wednesday, January 26th, 2000
Speaker: Sally Howard
The Ins And Outs of FrontPage (cool, "secret" stuff about what's really going on in those weird vti_ directories and stuff like that) by Sally Howard. It was mainly FrontPage 98 with a few comments about FrontPage 2000.
