2001 Meetings

November 21, 2001
Speaker: Barb Brenner
Barb Brenner spoke on the .NET Paradigm and what it means for developers. She began her presentation by asking the audience what ".NET" means to them at present. This produced a long list of assorted technologies and concepts, with some discussion of how they each inter-relate. Barn then proceeded with a Powerpoint presentation about the major components that make up .NET, from a developer's perspective, and what they are likely to mean for us in our daily programming lives going forward. Features such as ASP.NET, VB.NET, ADO.NET, the CLR, and Web Services were all discussed amongst others. This session was a very good introduction to the subject, and several who attended said they now have a foundational understanding of .NET that they didn't have before that evening.

Speaker: Bob Nims
Bob Nims gave a demo and explanation of his web site application, and what it took to migrate it to the .Net platform. His application grabs data off of the D&C website to gather movie listing information in order to provide a better way to display the listings and to plan your movie outing. See it yourself at www.bobnims.com.

September 2001
Speaker: Ben Barrow
Ben Barrow guided us through an introduction to Excel Pivot Tables. He demonstrated their power, flexability and ease of use. He also showed us how to create and manipulate these tools through VBA code.

Wednesday, June 20th 2001
Speaker: Tom Kolankiewicz
Tom Kolankiewicz gave a fascinating discussion on Windows CE. He also brought his "petting zoo" of HPCs, PPCs and the like. There must have been 6 computers in all. He discussed the development process as well as the direction of the industry. He had so much material that he wanted to come back in the fall and complete the discussion.

Wednesday, May 23rd 2001
Speaker: Mark Stutsrim
Mark Stutsrim gave an educated presentation on VB and SQL touching on the different flavors of VB/VBA and the different flavors of MS SQL. There was animated discussion on many points. No presentation materials are available.

Wednesday, Apr 25th 2001
Speaker: Ben Barrow
Ben Barrow gave an enlightening presentation on VBA in Excel. The Element K folks donated some "Inside Excel" briefs. Along with many examples of Excel automation and VBA usage, Ben also raved about the usefulness of pivot tables and promised to give a short filler presentation on it whenever we get an open night. There was some discussion on the viability of the June meeting date. Many people take off for the summer.
Ben's presentation can be downloaded here. (Power Point, Examples, and Object Model)

Wednesday, Mar 28th 2001
We tried something new this time and viewed one of Microsoft's online Multimedia seminars. We viewed the ".NET Framework Overview" course, which appeared to be a copy of a live PowerPoint presentation with narration. It gave a basic understanding of the ".Net Framework", though it did not really go into many details from a programmer's perspective. Unfortunately the included demos did not seem to be the right ones for this presentation. The group consensus was that the presentations given by real individuals, such as those recently given by Tim and Mark, are much more preferred, though it is an option if nothing else is available.

Speaker: Tim Arrowsmith
With the use of various live demos and code examples Tim Arrowsmith gave us an introduction to JavaScript (or was that Javascript or javascript or JScript or...?) and how it can be used to make our web pages more dynamic and user-responsive. He also demonstrated how differently the various browsers interpret and render the same javascript - good to know!

A presentation by SoftWire - a suite of ActiveX components that increase speed of development and usability. Very interesting stuff! Michael gave a full demo, handed out trial copies, and told us a very reasonable price for the 130+ ActiveX objects and graphical development environment. Very worth while - beats Labview hands down because it's native VB instead of proprietary technology.
